Rabiu Kwakwanso who was a former governor of Kano state and Dr Peter of Obi who was the former governor of Anambra state and the running mate to former vice president Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 presidential election was in the PDP until they recently defected to NNPP and Labour Party respectfully to run for the highest office in the nation.

PDP and Atiku Worries ?

The former vice president Atiku Abubakar and his party the PDP are concerned that Peter Obi’s defection to Labour Party will cost them votes in the south east which is considered a PDP stronghold, Likewise Rabiu Kwakwanso defection to the NNPP is considered a threat to the opposition party PDP in Kano state with a massive voting block. PDP also thinks Kwankwanso defection to NNPP will also booster the ruling party chances in the north.

The Labour Party and NNPP presidential candidates left the opposition party the PDP for various reasons. For Mr. Obi he left after purchasing the PDP’s 40 million naira presidential form and knowing the he can not get enough delegates to become the PDP flagbearer , while Mr. Kwakwanso left the party because he could not have won the PDP’s presidential tickets with the likes of Atiku Abubakar and Governor Nyesom Wike running against him.

Mr. Uche Secondus , the immediate past chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party confirmed this to the Punch News in a recent interview he granted to the paper. Mr Secondus said his party have a need to win states like Kano and other key states in the north.

He recalled that the current president victoriously carried fourty four local government with over one million four hundred thousands votes in the North, while Mr. Atiku only got three hundred thousand and ninety one votes.

Although the PDD did well in Kano in the last governorship election, it needed to do better now in other to win the presidency , and that is likely not to happen unless it forge alliance with the likes of Rabiu Kwakwanso of NNPP and Dr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

Its’s however unclear as at the time of this reporting what the People Democratic Party needed to do to bring this two presidential candidate back to its fold , as its now very clear the party may not be able to win the presidency with the likes of Dr, Peter Obi and Rabio Kwakwanso running on different platforms.

Senator Walid Jibrin, the PDP Board of Trustee chairman also confirmed their concern to the Punch News in an interview. The senator said its likely that South Easterner that normally vote PDP will now turn to Peter Obi , causing the party to lose their their greatest stronghold since 199.
This according to the senator is the reason why Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and the PDP have no option than to forge alliance with these two parties.

Another unanimous source confirmed to Punch that the PDP will surely lose the general election without the support of the south Easterners and Kano state with its massive voting block.

PDP will have no option than to bring back Rabiu Kwakwanso and Dr. Peter Obi back to its fold. However the party said it still have enough time to engage the two parties and convince them to return to the PDP.

The Punch News approached the Atiku Abubakar’s campaign organization to confirm if moves are being made by the former vice president to bring the likes of Dr Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwakwanso back to PDP or make one of them his running mate. Mr Paul Ibe , a media consultant to Atiku Abubakar who responded to questions said its unclear if his boss is making such moves, but confirmed that the former vice president is widening his outreach to capable Nigerians and the executive members of the PDP  to select the best candidate as his running mate.

However , the Peter Obi campaign director general said his boss will not be stepping down for anybody.
The DG Mr Okupe said Obi will never step down for any candidate, rather other candidate should consider stepping down for Mr. Peter Obi whose campaign is gaining momentum all across Nigeria.

“How can you ask a man who is generating this kind of support across the country to step down for anybody ?, this is a man whose time have come, this is a third force and nothing can stop this great movement” Mr. Okupe said.

Mr Peter Obi is very much contented being in the Labour Party and flying the party’s flag as the presidential candidate, Obi’s media aide, Valentine Obienyem told the Punch News.

On the VP matter… It will be critical to be more strategic than sentimental in selecting a running mate. To beat the PDP and APC a credible Northern candidate, who is intelligent, experienced and is widely respected across country must be sought.
